I've been teaching and tutoring at primary, secondary and tertiary levels for over ten years now and I never cease to be amazed at the fresh challenges and rewards that each new academic year presents. Every student brings something new, and that deserves no less than 100% effort from me.
My philosophy is to explore very avenue and leave no stone unturned in my own study of mathematics, because I genuinely feel that a profound knowledge of the subject matter is the biggest pre-requisite for being able to explain it. And explanation means more than regurgitaing what any student can get from a decent textbook; to that end, I make strong use of technology to help students visualise solutions and explore the processes that lead to them. That's perhaps the most profound lesson I learned in my own mathematics education journey - a picture truly does paint a thousand words, whether it's using simple manipulable graphics to show how fractions work or using mathematical computational engines to find and graph solutions to differential equations.
If taught badly mathematics can be a boring drudge; if taught properly it's exciting, fascinating... and fun!
A bit about me: After graduating, I worked in IT for a while before making the huge decision to become a stay at home dad. Once my guys were old enough to fend for themselves I wanted to find something else that gave me that sense of fulfilment, and so here I am. I have degrees in mathematics and theoretical physics as well as the PGCE teaching qualification. I've experience of the UK, Irish, Austalian and New Zealand systems at all levels, in class sizes ranging from one to three hundred plus.
