For the past 20 years, I have tutored Mathematics to many students from various backgrounds, from home-schooled secondary school students with special needs such as ADHD and dyslexia to GCSE and ‘A’ level students who want to achieve top grades for university. My academic background is in Maths, having completed both a degree and Master’s in Mathematics.

I approach my work individually and tailor the lessons to suit students' particular learning styles and needs. For instance, I use visual aids and oral techniques to ensure the lessons are engaging, with colours and diagrams. Challenging topics are taught in bite-size chunks so that the student builds good foundations before moving on to more complex concepts.

I tutor my sessions with patience, kindness, and sensitivity. I like to chat with students about their interests; I enjoy going to the cinema and walking my border collie, so I always mention his antics. I am also happy to provide homework if the student wants to practise further.

With time, I build a trusting relationship with the students, which improves their confidence in asking more probing questions without feeling “silly” or “being a burden”. Throughout my lessons, I praise and encourage them to have a go at questions, giving them positive and constructive feedback. Some students have anxiety and low self-esteem, and it is important that they feel at ease with me and enjoy the sessions.

Exam and study techniques are an essential part of my sessions. I review and explain how exams are marked using past papers, which empowers students to understand what is required from them in exam conditions fully.
